Hull Bach Choir – German Masses
Sat 30th Mar 2019 @ 7:30 pm£1 – £15
50 YEARS HOLDING THE BATON
By the end of March this year Anthony Ford will have been the conductor of HBC for fifty years. He came to Hull as a young University Music Lecturer in 1966. In 1969 he was invited to succeed Denis Arnold as conductor of the Bach Choir.
Under his direction, the Choir has performed over a hundred major works by Bach, Handel, Purcell, Haydn, Beethoven, Mozart and many more. We hope you will join us to celebrate this momentous achievement at the Hummel and Schubert concert on March 30th.
Hummel Mass in D major op 111
Schubert Mass in E flat major D950
Hummel succeeded Haydn as Kapellmeister to Prince Esterhazy, although he refused to take the title formally until Haydn’s death. He was also a friend of Beethoven and was one of the foremost pianists of his day. His works are only now being rediscovered, and his settings of the Mass were worthy successors of Haydn’s great series. It is time we added Hummel to the choir’s list of composers, and it is indicative of our conductor’s adventurous spirit that a work by a composer we have never before performed should be given at the Fiftieth Anniversary of his first concert with us. With it, we perform Schubert’s great E flat Mass, one of his last works, which dates from the last year of his short life and which has not been given in the area for nearly a generation.
