This performance is by second-year Drama students, who have been working on responses to two Classical and one Early Modern text(s): Euripides Hekabe, Ovid’s Metamorphoses (book 6), and Shakespeare’s Titus Andronicus. In particular, the work presented will consider how these texts represent issues of violence, including sexual violence (rape), mutilation and murder, within the tradition of revenge and atrocity drama.

The performance is of a new work – framed in response to the three texts studied. It is immersive, with a small audience embedded within the stage action. It contains scenes that many people will find culturally sensitive and highly disturbing, particularly concerning sexual violence, torture, cannibalism and murder through mutilation. Our aim is not to shock, but to consider how these canonical Classical and Renaissance texts can be used to interrogate issues of violence and hatred that are sadly still a part of our own society.

Each performance will be followed by a discussion-based debrief with the audience, staff members and the company of student actors.
